How is a community’s history, culture and identity linked to their language? And how do people process and come to terms with feeling uprooted when their language slowly starts dying. Journalist Sewa Bhattarai talks to researcher and editor Kailash Rai about her changing relationship with her mother tongue Dungmali, Nepali language and the Nepali state. Dungmali is one of the 123 languages spoken in Nepal. The last census listed Dungmali as an endangered language since it is now only spoken by about 6000 people, mostly Kiratis in different areas of Bhojpur district in eastern Nepal.
